Marcy Open School offers a learning climate where the student is the center, emphasizing academic achievement as well as personal development that promotes lifelong learning and individual goal setting. Learning takes place in looping classrooms (except kindergarten) where many activities occur at the same time, using an integrated curriculum in which students are taught to take responsibility for themselves and their learning. Teachers function as guides and facilitators of learning. Marcy strongly promotes learning through the arts by involving students in arts activities with local artists through the Marcy Arts Partnership; and emphasizes a commitment to peace education through its membership as an International Peace Site. Interested in having your child attend Marcy Open School? Why not take a tour? During the tour you can ask questions, meet teachers and staff, visit the library/media center, theater, gym, multipurpose room, and classrooms. Tours will resume in October. In response to parent questions about how "Open" school philosophy is used at other schools, Corinth Matera from South High will be leading a panel discussion at the MOPSC meeting this Thursday, Dec. 3 at 6:00. There will be two more teachers from the Open program and some South Open students there to talk about their experiences. If you are curious about how Open is implemented at other schools, and how this can influcence Open at Marcy, please plan on attending. Everyone is welcome!
Parents of students in grades 6, 7, 8 who are curious about participating in the musical should plan on attending an Informational Meeting with Project Success on Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 6:30. Auditions will take place on Jan. 6 & 7 at 3:30. This is your chance to learn about how audtions work, the rehearsal schedule, expectations for participants and performances. We are excited to welcome Gear Up (Gaining Early Awareness and REadiness for Undergraduate Programs) to Marcy. This program will serve students in grades 7 & 8, and follow them into high school. Buy a Brick, Build a Labyrinth Support the Marcy Open Community and Marcy Holmes Neighborhood in transforming the unusable space next to the playground with a 30 x 30 foot labyrinth as a focal point that will be a permanent Peace destination to all with a donation brick pathway leading to the sidewalk.
