Happy Winter Break,

What a fun week we had with our gingerbread unit, making our gingerbread houses, a gingerbread man cookie graphing activity and a big buddy gingerbread paper house that will come home today.

Thank you to all the families who donated supplies for the gingerbread houses or our classroom.  It makes a huge difference.  Also, thank you to the families who were able to help with gingerbread house decorating. The students loved it and were worried we were breaking our school food policy. I explained we weren’t eating them at school, just using the materials to decorate. Cute that they brought it up!

Our week at a glance:
Reading: comparing books-character, setting, ending: this was our last week of our gingerbread unit.  I have finished testing all the students and we will have new groups when we return in January. We will begin our ‘accuracy strategy’ unit while reading books about winter when we return. I’ve attached a preview for you.
Math: We finished our unit on addition and making numbers/amounts in different ways. Our next unit is on comparing and ordering objects by size, weight and length.
Writing: We will start a unit on writing in response to reading. Some of it will be guided writing, other parts will be creative.
Social Studies: We are still in our “Families, Time and Culture” unit.  One of the standards for this unit is for your child to recite the days of the week and months of the year.  We sing songs to help us. Have your child sing them to you and then ask, “What are the days of the week?” “What are the months of the year?”  Vocabulary introduced so far in this unit: past, present, future, morning, afternoon, evening, months, days, week, year.

Sharing: January schedule went home and you can also find the sharing calendars on my school web page under ‘sharing.’ (You will also find previous newsletters on the webpage).  The webpage is a slow work in progress but I’m hoping to work on using the website more and more as a resource for families.  You’ll have to let me know what you wish was on the website so I can work toward providing that to families.

Next YEAR:  (Becky will return for the rest of the year!!!!)
Wednesday: gym
Thursday: art
Friday: gym, celebrate Belen’s birthday
Sounds: Z and O
Sight (star) words: go, here (we didn’t get to them this week).

Upcoming days off: (see the attached calendar)
Friday, January 18
Monday, January 21

Friday Folders- Handwriting homework for the letters Z and O. There is also one math page where students fill in the missing numbers. Please have them correct any reversals and remind them that we start our numbers at the top! A January principal’s challenge is being sent home as well (it is also attached). You can return the December challenge in the Friday folder on Jan. 4th.

Have a great winter break,
