Happy Friday!

We had a great week celebrating the 100th day of school.

Conferences are Thursday night 2/28/13 and all day on Friday 3/1/13 (no school that day). More information and sign up information will come in a separate email.

Sharing: Please make sure the item your child brings in to share is a way for us to get to know your child better….what they like to do, places they like to go, people that are important to them…. Please remember no toys. (You can find more information on sharing and the original letter that went home this fall on our class page of the Marcy website).

Our week at a glance:
Reading: We are going to finish our non-fiction reading unit next week. We focused on table of contents, headings, the use of photographs and the difference of fiction from non-fiction.
Math: We are finishing up our unit and doing one-on-one math assessments on measurements. We’ve been playing a lot of games with dice to see the number fast (instead of counting the dots). Some of us use 2 dice and try to add them fast in our games. I encourage you to play games with dice at home.
Writing: We are deep in our non-fiction writing unit and the students are doing a great job. We’ve revisited what quality work looks like (spacing, lower case letters, best handwriting, periods).
Social Studies: We will start our unit on Goods and Services next week.
Science: We are learning about fabric. Students have a weaving project coming home in the Friday Folder.

Next week:
Monday: Science, African American Parent Involvement day assembly
Tuesday: Science
Wednesday: Science, (Valentine box/bag is due)
Thursday: Science, Valentine’s day and delivery!
Friday: Science, big buddies
Sight (star) words: yes, no

Valentine’s Day- Reminder that Valentine boxes or bags are due on WEDNESDAY.  They can be turned in early.  Students can bring Valentine’s on THURSDAY (or earlier) to deliver in the morning. NO CANDY PLEASE.

Friday Folders- The only homework is the sight word writing. Have your students use lower case letters, go slow in forming the words. Remember 2 finger space between words.  It helps kids learn to spell them quicker if they say each letter out loud as they write it and then read the word after it is written.

You will find a permission slip in the Friday folder. The author of an educational teaching book will have me pilot some of her teaching ideas in my classroom and will be filming me (and the children) during this process. She will also take photographs of some students work to include in the book.  She needs your permission to do this. I feel it is an incredible honor and opportunity for this to take place. I have VOLUNTEERED for this opportunity and receive nothing but a free book after the book is published. Please consider signing the waiver so our class can reap the academic benefits of this project.

Volunteers Needed:
Options Day is Wednesday, February 27th. We will have a Dr. Seuss theme for all the centers in the classroom and need adult hands to help. Please email me if you can volunteer. The time is 9:20-10:40.   (9:20 to read over your activity, 9:30 start time). Thanks!

Items needed:
½ inch white 3-ring binders with clear display sleeve
Color cardstock/index paper
Blue spiral notebooks
Any Valentine goodies for our writing center: doilies, heart stickers, foam pieces, sequence etc…

I hope you have a great weekend and enjoy our snowstorm!
