Happy January!

Afterschool classes: No afterschool class this week. If your child usually stays, please let me know the transportation plans for afterschool.

Cuddly Dudley is making his way to your home. This is a different kind of class book. When Cuddly Dudley visits your house, open the binder and read what to do to your page of the class book. Be sure to return him (along with the book, binder with your completed page) the next day so he can go home with a new friend. This is a great way to kick off our Penguin unit.

We started the 3 H’s when saying goodbye: High Five, Handshake or Hug. The student chooses which one they want to use when saying good-bye to Becky and I. The kids have loved it and so do we!

We had a ‘lock down’ drill.  This is a drill required by the state in the event a questionable person is in the building. We lock our door, turn off lights, pull shades and sit quietly in a non-visible place. The students did a wonderful job.

Our week at a glance:
Reading: We started our penguin unit and are working on retelling the story by remembering the who (character), what (problem or storyline), where and when (setting) in the story. This week we have focused on fiction penguin stories we will continue one more week of fiction penguin stories by studying a character through 4 stories (Tacky the Penguin). Then we will move onto non-fiction books about Penguins.
Math: We are still studying length and measurement.  We visit math stations daily where we are practicing sorting by a variety of attributes, measuring, playing greater than/less than games.
Writing: We are still writing in response to literature.  We are practicing spacing between words, starting with uppercase letters, the rest of the letters are lower case, ending with a period, using our word wall for star words and stretching all the other words out on our arm.
Social Studies: We are still in our “Families, Time and Culture” unit. We learned that we can learn about the past from people, books, videos, photos and OBJECTS. Thank you to all the families that brought something from the past to share. They were fun stories to listen to.
