Happy New Year!

I hope you had a great winter break and found time to relax and enjoy family and friends. I loved the 11 days home with my family. My husband is a teacher at Armstrong high school so the entire family was home together on break.

Highlight of the week-Students went snowshoeing in Gym class today! They will snowshoe 1-2 times a week for the month of January. I’ll try to get pictures for their memory books.

Today, our new assistant principal, LaShawn, joined us for morning meeting.  We did funny voices for our greeting (ask your child what voice they used) and we played the snowkey pokey.  He shared that his favorite book was the autobiography of Malcolm X and a student shared that that was his favorite book too. (so cute!)

Afterschool classes: Afterschool classes start back up on Monday. We go for 2 weeks and then have one week off for Martin Luther King week (1/22-1/24).  If you are in my afterschool class you are registered for the full year, you do not need to re-register. If you are signed up for community ed classes (the purple brochure coming home today) you will need to re-register. Classes will run through May 9th, with the exception of spring break.

Our week at a glance:
Reading: We are reading a lot of books about snow/winter and practicing the following reading strategies: Eagle eye-look at the picture for clues; Lips the Fish: Get your mouth ready to say the word.
Math: We started our unit on length and measurement. Some vocabulary we’ve introduced: longer, shorter, greater than, less than.
Writing: We wrote in response to reading and wrote a birthday book for Belen.
Social Studies: We are still in our “Families, Time and Culture” unit.  We had a pre-assessment to brainstorm ways we can learn about the past. Students came up with the computer, talking to older people, reading in books.  We will spend the next 2 weeks exploring these ways (and more).

If you place an on-line order, please give me a head’s up.
