Happy February!

I can’t believe it is February and wow, how time flies.  We have been reading a lot of books about Ground hog’s day (Feb. 2) and have predicted whether we will see the groundhog’s shadow tomorrow.  If we see it, then we have 6 more weeks of winter. If we don’t see it, spring is around the corner. Help your child notice if the groundhog would see his shadow. We will talk about it on Monday.

Welcome to a new student, Kassim!

Our week at a glance:
Reading: We started our non-fiction unit in reading. We are learning new information from books (about penguins) and discussing how to tell if a book is fiction or non-fiction.
Math: We are busy in math stations measuring weight and length of objects, as well as, simple addition.
Writing: We started our non-fiction writing unit and will do this in conjunction with our reader’s workshop lessons. We will all write an ‘all-about’ book about penguins.
Social Studies: We are finishing our unit on Time, families and cultures. We will take our end of unit assessment next week.

Next week:
Monday: Science
Tuesday: Science
Wednesday: Science, 100th day of school celebration
Thursday: Science
Friday: Science
Sight (star) words: you, little

Friday Folders- Included is a sorting by number of letters activity for you to do with your child. Please use the name cards from last week’s vowel activity. You will also find a 50-frame for your child to complete. Please observe your child forming numbers…they all start at the top and number 4 is the only one with ‘pick ups.’ The principal’s reading challenge for February, a list of optional activities to do with your child and the sharing calendar are coming home today.  I am sending home 2 pieces of Valentine homework. I was going to hold one until next week, but thought some families might want more time.  One is to make/decorate a valentine box or bag. The other is a list of student names so your child can write them on Valentines. Please understand that Valentines should be candy free.

Volunteers Needed:
Options Day is Wednesday, February 27th. We will have a Dr. Seuss theme for all the centers in the classroom and need adult hands to help. Please email me if you can volunteer. The time is 9:20-10:40.   (9:20 to read over your activity, 9:30 start time). Thanks!

Items needed:
Blue spiral notebooks
Clear plastic sheet protectors
1 bag stick pretzels (for 100th day snack-need by TUESDAY)
1 box Ritz crackers (for 100th day snack-need by TUESDAY)
Any Valentine goodies for our writing center: doilies, heart stickers, foam pieces, sequence etc…

I hope you have a great weekend. I will be spending it with Feed My Starving Children.  Some of the Marcy staff are packing meals tonight and then my family will pack meals with friends tomorrow. It is a great organization to involve kids in doing something amazing for others.
