Parent Council Meeting Minutes
February 4, 2010
6:30 pm
Multipurpose Room

Board members present: Julia Janousek (chair and Marcy Family Network facilitator); Lisa Hondros (secretary, leadership representative); Sidney Orchard (family and community liaison).
Admin/teachers present: Garrett Petrie (autism program).


1. Principal’s Report – Donna absent.
2. Treasurer’s Report – Sarah absent. Julia presented rough numbers.
3. Leadership Report (Lisa)
a. Extra $ from district for magnet schools. Marcy gets $62,500 that must be spent on materials and/or supplies to fortify open; must be spent this year; must have our request in two weeks; subgroup of Leadership Council will be meeting on Monday 2/8 to discuss plan for spending this money. Ideas mentioned at Leadership: books, musical instruments, technology, family event (e.g. play, musical, author day), portfolios, fidelity to responsive classroom. Money for staff development may be available from a different fund. District contact: Leann Dow.

b. Classroom survey, multi-grade v. single grade: roughly half of teachers expressed frustration with blended grades; Leadership Council discussion acknowledged challenges while emphasizing that blended classrooms are integral to open school; discussed need for continuing staff development and support for blended classrooms.
PC Discussion: is there orientation regarding open for new staff? No.

c. Online Algebra – insufficient computer memory issues, resolved at the moment by Frank spending $400 of PC dollars allocated to media. He may be reimbursed by district.
d. Lunchroom menu and choices – staff meeting with the Nutrition Center people on 2/11 to work on increasing choices.

4. Special Requests
Sidney: Bookroom used by teachers has been reorganized. Books are old – she’s heard there’s nothing after 1996.
Response: use the upcoming book fair to acquire books; need 10-12 copies of each book; Elizabeth Hawley will follow up on this issue for the book fair (April 23-24).

5. Changing School Options
Jill Davis contacted Lisa H. today. She is working to set up a meeting for parents of 8th graders with Brenda C and SHS principal.

6. Looking forward
a. Annual fund letters go out next month (fold and stuff envelopes at the March meeting)
b. Speakers: seeking ideas for future meetings
c. Volunteer needs
Musical: needed in March for make-up, concessions, tickets, etc.
Marcy History Day: March 3
Math Carnival: March 15, everything is free, pizza, games
MAP Gala: April 17
Dinner/Book Fair: April 23-24
Teacher Appreciation Day: May 4
Plant Sale: May 7-8

d. April meeting: Nominations for Board Officers
e. May meeting: Election of Board Officers
