Room 107

Hello and welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!  First grade is a magical year full of new beginnings and awakenings.  I'm privileged to be teaching your precious little ones and helping them learn to enjoy being a part of a safe, peaceful and growing learning community.  I've been teaching in Minneapolis Public Schools since 1997, mostly at Marcy Open in first grade! This year I'll be hosting a student teacher from the U of M named Zianya Steigauf.  It'll be great to have two teachers in the classroom!

Please click on the links to find out more information about our classroom.

I'll email you happenings and reminders as they occur and a weekly paper newsletter will be sent home each week in the Friday folder.  It'll let you know upcoming events and what we've been working on in school.

As always, please feel free to call, text or stop in anytime.  The classroom door's open!

Classroom Philosophy for 107

We  teach using the Responsive Classroom philosophy and approach. We have a morning meeting, songs, games, morning messages, greetings, sharing, closing circle and guided discoveries on all our classroom materials. I believe that this is a proactive approach to discipline and a solid way to build community.  It's also FUN!

Responsive Classroom Approach

  • The social curriculum is an important as the academic curriculum
  • How children learn is as important as what children learn
  • The greatest cognitive growth occurs through social interaction
  • Children need a set of social skills in order to be successful academically and socially
  • Knowing the children we teach is as important as knowing the content we teach
  • Knowing the families of the students is as important as knowing the students
