Marcy Open School

Marcy Open School offers a learning climate where the student is the center, emphasizing academic achievement as well as personal development that promotes lifelong learning and individual goal setting. Learning takes place using integrated, project-based curriculum in which students are taught to take responsibility for themselves and their learning. Teachers function as guides and facilitators of learning.

Marcy strongly promotes learning through the arts by involving students in arts activities with local artists through the Marcy Arts Partnership; and emphasizes a commitment to peace education through its membership as an International Peace Site.

Parents are welcome in school as observers, helpers and classroom participants. What is an Open School?

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Walkouts Scheduled Across the Country

A Global Climate Strike is scheduled to begin this Friday, Sept. 20. In the United States, it calls for people to strike on Sept. 20, “three days before the UN Climate Summit in NYC, to demand transformative action be taken to address the climate crisis.” There is a Twin Cities Youth Climate Strike scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m., with students meeting at the Western Sculpture Park in St. Paul and then marching to the Capit0l. We expect many students and families may participate in this event at all grade levels and we have already received questions about our policy and plan for this event.

For students under 9th grade :

Students wishing to participate will be required to follow normal sign-out procedures for their school building, requiring sign out by a parent or previously authorized adult, or written permission in advance from an authorized parent or guardian. If students refuse to comply with the request to follow protocol, parents shall be called prior to students leaving if possible. If students leave without permission, staff will follow and relay location information to the administration who will inform parents. Physical restraint should only be used if a student is at risk of harming self or others and if applicable in compliance with the students IEP.
