Happy Friday!

We start Media check out on Monday. We will go to media every Monday.  Students can check out one book at a time, so if they return the book the following week they can check out a new book.

Sharing: Thank you for helping your student be prepared to share on their sharing day. We are learning to LISTEN and ask questions about what was said (and not just random things).

Illness policy: We've had some sick kids this week. Thank you for keeping your child home when they are sick. This helps reduce the amount of illness in the classroom.  It is policy that your child needs to be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.  Pink eye, strep throat etc.... 24 hours on medication before returning. If you have questions, please let me know.

Professional development for kindergarten happens Mondays from 7:30-9:00am. An Assistant Teacher, Krista, covers the classroom. She is in our room daily for reading so she knows the students.

Water bottles: we are asking for no water bottles at school. We have had daily spills and now that math stations are in full swing, they get in the way at stations. The weather is cold so I know they will be just fine getting a drink the 3 times we go to the hall restrooms and using the water fountain in the classroom.

Fall fun is around the corner. It is a mini carnival in our gym and school. It takes place Friday, Oct. 26.  Each classroom sponsors a basket of goods that is raffled at Fall fun. Our classroom theme is "Rainy day with kids." You can donate anything that might fit the theme....craft supplies, games, toys, movies etc... I will have a box to collect the items.

Our first family home project went home in the friday folder. Please be sure to use the orange paper provided for the activity.

Think sheets: We are getting close to finishing up our social studies unit on Rules, Rights and responsibilities. I've introduced our school wide 'think sheets' and we've practiced completing them in the classroom. Students will now complete them on break number 3 when they go to Ms. Barbs room. I will make a copy and ask you to sign and return the think sheet which would indicate you have talked to your child about: the rule broken, the result of breaking the rule (hurt someone, lost learning time, hurt feelings etc...) and a plan for change (how can we fix it).

Class books have started going home. We make a class book each week and the book circulates from home to home. Please keep the book bag for ONE night (it takes 28 nights to make it around the room...that is 6 weeks!)

Birthday book bag: To help celebrate birthdays, there is a birthday book bag with books to read with your child and a journal where you write down how you celebrated your child's birthday. (parents do the writing, students illustrate). We will share these with the class. You can keep this book bag for 2 nights.

We are in the Science rotation for centers (no Art and Gym for a couple of weeks).

We will discuss unity day on Wednesday. Please see below for more information:
Unity Day - Unite Against Bullying - Wear ORANGE - Wednesday, October 10th

Marcy Open will be participating in Unity Day again this year on Wednesday, October 10th!

Unity Day is sponsored by PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center <http://www.pacer.org/bullying/nbpm/unity-day.asp>.  By wearing ORANGE on Unity Day, we will show each other that we are not alone here at Marcy, even if we feel like we have either witnessed bullying or been a target of bullying.

We hope to make students aware of places to find support and resources here at Marcy and in the community.  There will also be a large poster for students to come together to sign an anti-bullying pledge.

All students are invited to create posters for Unity Day, either at school or at home.  We will hang posters in the hallways to help promote Unity Day.  Poster submissions should try to include the following elements:

- The color orange
- The words “Unity Day" and "October 10th”
- A reminder to wear ORANGE on Unity Day
- A message about uniting against bullying

Poster submissions can be give to your classroom/homeroom teacher, or be delivered to Resource Room 224.

Together we can lead the movement against bullying!

There will be K-4 Movie Night on Wed. Oct. 24 6:30-8:30 to illustrate and support Unity and Bully prevention.

Have a great weekend!
